Why support this?
Much of what we know about the uncomfortable truths of international sport has come to light through of journalism.
Corruption scandals, governance failures, abuse of power, human rights violations, and integrity breaches in sport have largely been exposed by brave journalists who were willing to investigate structures, challenge powerful interests, and take personal and professional risks to document what was happening behind closed doors.
Without investigative journalism, many of these issues would remain unknown – or would surface only when it is too late to act.
Yet the conditions for conducting this kind of journalism are deteriorating. Investigations into international sport are time-consuming, demanding, and often financially risky. As newsroom resources shrink, fewer journalists are able to pursue long-term, independent investigations into sport governance, mega-events, and global power structures.
The Play the Game Journalism Fund exists to help change that.
By supporting the fund, you help:
- enable journalists to investigate stories that would otherwise not be told
- support courageous freelance journalists working in complex and sensitive environments
- ensure that power in sport continues to be scrutinised independently
- turn public concern into concrete, high-quality journalism
This fund exists because democracy in sport does not happen by itself.
It relies on independent journalism with the time, resources, and freedom to ask difficult questions - and to follow the answers wherever they lead.
