Switzerland reviews corruption laws

Switzerland’s sports ministry is currently reviewing the country’s laws regarding corruption in sport in the wake of the latest corruption scandal surrounding Swiss-based FIFA.

Swiss Defence and Sports Minister Ueli Maurer has asked officials to examine the issue and report back with recommendations, with a view to possibly tightening the net.

Federal Sports Office spokesman Christoph Lauener said that the review was due to Switzerland's role as a host of international sports federations. 'And corruption is in the meantime a bigger danger for sports and its image than doping,' he added.

Switzerland is the home of over 40 international sports federations, which are covered by special hosting agreements granting dispensation from some local laws such as taxation and other flexible legal terms that allow them to govern their own affairs.
