WADA teams up with drug companies to fight doping
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and several major drug companies are now cooperating in order to identify medicinal compounds that might potentially be misused by athletes.
Several sports such as cycling and athletics have been plagued by doping cases over recent years. In order to tackle this more effectively, WADA director-general David Howman signed a joint decleration with Haruo Naito, president of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA), whose members include companies such as GlaxoSmithKline and Merck & Co."As soon as a reliable method to detect a particular doping compound in athletes is developed, dopers start looking for a new compound which might enhance performance,” WADA president John Fahey said in a statement.“Working closely with pharmaceutical companies to identify new potential doping compounds before they enter clinical trials should facilitate much faster development of detection methods which will benefit clean athletes worldwide.”
