Laura Robinson receives award for journalistic excellence

Canadian reporter and author Laura Robinson was awarded the Debwewin Citation for journalism excellence recognising her work on covering First Nations people and their access to high-level sport.

The Debwewin Citation for journalism excellence was yesterday awarded to Laura Robinson for her reports on the Ashinashibek people and the Vancouver Olympics 2010 where she among other important issues questioned the fact that not one aboriginal were part of the Canadian Olympic team. The award was presented by Grand Council Cheif Patrick Madahbee during an assembly of the Anishinabek Nation in Garden River First Nation, Canada yesterday.

"Debwewin means 'truth' in our language," said Madahbee according to the press release," and these awards celebrate First Nation and other journalists in our territory who do outstanding jobs of telling our stories – something mainstream media have not historically done very well. We congratulate Laura Robinson on her contributions."
