Aján re-elected president of the IWF
Amidst accusations of financial mismanagement, Hungarian Tamás Aján was re-elected president of the International Weightlifting Federation during this week’s IWF congress in Moscow, Russia.
Aján was up against the head of the European Weightlifting Federation, the Italian Antonio Urso. The vote turned out 80-55 in Aján’s favor.
“I thank for the support of those who voted for me and I extend my hand to those who didn’t. We have to be united and we have to work hard for the future of Weightlifting,” said Aján after the announcement of his victory according to the IWF website.
Aján first joined the federation in 1976, serving as Secretary General up until he took over the president seat in 2000.
This election will mark the fourth term for Aján after which he will have served as the federation’s president for 16 years.
Earlier this month reports emerged about mismanagement of IWF Olympic revenues under the leadership of Aján, but they did not affect the re-election though the numbers of votes against Aján showed a significant opposition in the federation for the first time during his time in office.
