Richard Ings is the CEO and Chairman of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Drug Authority (ASADA).
Born and raised in Sydney, Richard attended James Ruse Agricultural High School in Sydney and completed his Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics at the University of Sydney.
Following his university graduation in 1985, Richard commenced working for IBM. However, after only one week with the organisation he received an offer of employment from the Men’s International Professional Tennis Council (MIPTC) the then international governing body for men’s professional tennis. He accepted, and at the age of 20 became the world’s youngest professional full-time tennis umpire on the men’s professional circuit – one of only two in the world.
After seven years umpiring over 2,000 men’s professional tennis matches spread over 26 countries, Richard took a sabbatical from umpiring in 1992 to complete a Masters Degree in Business Administration at INSEAD, Fontainebleau France where he majored in corporate finance, strategy and entrepreneurship.
Returning to Australia in 1993, he spent three years with Coca-Cola Amatil (NSW), moving to the role of NSW Sales Manager - Vending. In 1996 he was recruited by the Smith’s Snackfood Company (A Divisions of PepsiCo) first as National Sales Manager Vending before being promoted to General Manager Smith’s SnackVend.
In 2001, Richard returned to sport when he was recruited by the ATP Tour to the position of Executive Vice President Rules and Competition based in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. While with the ATP Tour, a membership organisation partnering elite professional tennis players with 200 major international tournaments, Richard was responsible for developing and implementing anti-doping and anti-corruption programs for men’s professional tennis.
In September 2005, Richard moved back to Australia when offered the position of CEO of the Australian Sports Drug Agency (ASDA), before being appointed the inaugural CEO and Chairman of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Drug Authority (ASADA) in March 2006.
