Record participation in International Sports Press Survey 2011

A record number of nations have now confirmed their participation in the International Sports Press Survey 2011, an update of the 2005 version which at the time was the biggest quantitative survey ever of the sports content in the written press.

This year however, even more university scholars have responded positively to the call sent out in February. In 2005, the survey covered 37 newspapers from ten nations on three continents. The 2011 edition will include close to 80 newspapers from 22 countries on six continents.

“It has been an overwhelmingly positive response, and we are grateful to the many academics and students who will now provide a solid fact basis for the ongoing debate about sports journalism,” says International Director of Play the Game, Jens Sejer Andersen.

The results of the survey will be presented the 3rd October at the opening of Play the Game 2011 hosted by the German Sport University Cologne. Read more about the Play the Game 2011 conference here.

The almost 35 research teams will be coordinated by the host university’s Dr. Jörg-Uwe Nieland and Professor Thomas Horky from the Macromedia University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg. In return for their free effort, survey partners get exclusive access to the international database for one year whereupon it is made accessible to all.

Of the countries taking part in 2005, only Austria and Norway are missing. The nations in 2011 are:

Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, England, Germany, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Scotland, Slovakia, South Africa, Switzerland, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, USA and Zambia.
