About the IOC meetings

The first nine days of October 2009, Copenhagen was home for the 121st Olympic Session and the XIIIth Olympic Congress. This year's session elected Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as the host city of the Olympic Summer Games 2016 and new members for the Olympic Committee were elected.

The meetings were split into three parts.

October 1-2: First half of 121st Olympic Session

The host city of the Olympic Games 2016 will be chosen. The candidate cities are Madrid, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and Chicago.

October 3-5: XIIIth Olympic Congress

This is the XIIIth Olympic Congress. The Olympic Congress is not a regular event, congresses are held “at intervals determined by the IOC”.  Ahead of the Congress, since April last year members of the Olympic Family have been able to put forward papers, suggestions etc. for consideration in the discussion of the Olympic Movement and its development.

“There is a Congress very infrequently, and for a very good reason. Because this is a time to reflect on the past and have a debate on the future. Traditionally, the Olympic Congress has been the catalyst for significant and meaningful developments, and I believe Copenhagen will be no different.”  Quote Jacques Rogge, President of the IOC, Source: http://www.aipsmedia.com/index.php?page=news&cod=2657&tp=n

For the first time this year, the Olympic Movement invited the public a long with the Olympic Family to express opinions on the discussion themes through the Virtual Olympic Congress.

The contributions were categorised into five themes each with three related sub-themes. These themes were the basis of the discussions taking place at the three days of the Olympic Congress.

October 7-9: Second half of the 121st Olympic Session

New members of the Olympic Committee were be elected a long with two new sports for the Olympic Games.
