Thomas Horky studied Sports Science, Journalism and Linguistics. After completing an internship for the German Press Agency (dpa) he became a researcher from 1994-1997 in the Faculty of Sports Science at the University of Hamburg. He graduated in 2001 with a work about the staging of sports in mass media, published as Die Inszenierung des Sports in der Massenkommunikation. Theoretische Grundlagen und Analyse von Medienberichterstattung (XOX, 2001), and is co-editor and author of the fundamental book Sportjournalismus (UVK, 2009). 

2004-2007 Thomas Horky was a researcher at the Hamburg Institute for Sportjournalism. 2007-2009 he was appointed as a lecturer for special tasks at the institute for Sportjournalism at the German Sports University in Cologne. Furthermore, he was assigned as a lecturer for the Universities of Hamburg, Leipzig, Lüneburg and the German Sports University in Cologne. His main tasks deal with Sportsmedia and Compatibility, Quality Characteristics of Sportjournalism as well as Sportjournalism and Entertainment.

Thomas Horky is a member of the German Society of Sport Science and the German Society of Media and Communication Studies. He wrote several contributions to international and national journals like the International Journal of Sport Communication and the European Journal for Sport and Society, many book chapters and articles for scientific magazines. With Sport & Kommunikation he is editing since several years a book-series for the combination of mediasport science and sportjournalism. 2009 and 2010 he was invited for speeches to World Cup-Conferences in Capetown and Grahamstown/South Africa.
