Matthew Nicholson is an Associate Professor in Sport Management within the School of Human Movement and Sport Sciences.

Matthew’s work has been based in the areas of sport policy, sport media, sport management, football studies and the relationship between sport and social capital.

Matthew’s current research focuses on the contribution of sport and active recreation to community wellbeing (using social capital as a theoretical framework), the development of Australian and international sport policy, the extent and impact of alcohol advertising, sponsorship and promotion through sport and the commercial and cultural development of Australia’s football codes.

One of Matthew’s priorities is to translate research into practice and have his research influence teaching practices - his co-authored Sport Management text is one of the world’s most widely prescribed texts in the area.

Matthew’s research has been funded by the Australian Research Council, Sport and Recreation Victoria, VicHealth, RecLink, Sport Knowledge Australia and Country Racing Victoria.
