John Bale was born in Cardiff and educated at London University. He teaches and researches at the Center for Idrt, Aarhus University, Denmark and the Deparetment of Education, Keele University, UK.

He has been a visiting professor at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland and the University of Western Ontario, Canada and has lectured widely at universities in most countries of Western Europe and also in North America and Australia.

He has authored many articles and books and pioneered the geographical study of sport. Among his books are The Brawn Drain: Foreign Student-Athletes in American Universities, Sport, Space and the City, Landscapes of Modern Sport, Kenyan Running: Movement Culture, Geography and Global Change (co-authored with Joe Sang) and Imagined Olympians: Body Culture and Colonial Representation in Rwanda.
