Jean-Paul Marthoz was born in Belgium in 1950.

After graduating in foreign langagues in Brussels he worked as a journalist covering Latin America for French and Belgian media. He joined the Brussels daily Le Soir in 1980 where he was successively Americas editor, foreign editor, editorial-page editor and managing editor. In 1991, he became editor in chief of a new Sunday paper DimancheMatin and in 1993 was appointed editor in chief of Belgium's leading business weekly Trends/Tendances.

In 1994 he became director of the Media for Democracy Programme in Africa, sponsored by the International Federation of Journalists and the European Commission. Since 1996 he has been the European Press Director of Human Rights Watch.

Jean-Paul Marthoz has written 4 books on international journalism and foreign affairs, contributed chapters to twenty books mostly on human rights or the media, and has been a speaker at events organized by the European Union, the Council of Europe and Unesco.

He is a guest professor of "Ethics in International Journalism" at the Institute of Higher Studies in Applied Communications (Brussels) and has been an advisor to the Geneva-based International Council on Human Rights Policy on its project on Media and Human Rights (2002).

He is currently advising the Panos Institute in Paris on a study of media coverage of September 11 and its aftermath in Arab and African media.
