Jonathan Ellis

Solicitor, Charles Russell LLP

Jonathan Ellis

Jonathan joined Charles Russell as a trainee and qualified into the Commercial Dispute Resolution team in 2004. In addition to advising on all areas of commercial dispute resolution, Jonathan has developed a specialism in sports regulatory work.

Jonathan has had notable recent experience in High Court litigation for The Football Association and the British Horseracing Regulatory Authority. Jonathan acted for The Football Association in the High Court and Court of Appeal proceedings commenced by the football agent Paul Stretford and again for The Football Association in defending an application for an injunction brought by Charlton Athletic. He also acted for the British Horseracing Authority (then the Jockey Club) in the Administrative Court and the Queen’s Bench Division proceedings commenced by the trainer William Mullins.

In relation to disciplinary work, Jonathan has acted for the British Horseracing Authority on a number of disciplinary cases (working closely with Betfair) and for an amateur rugby player before the RFU’s Disciplinary Panel. Jonathan also regularly advises The Football Association in relation to disciplinary and regulatory matters, and has recently played a central in advising The Football Association on the recent introduction of its Player Agents Regulations.

Jonathan’s other regulatory experience includes acting for Honda F1, and representing Time Out Dubai in an arbitration brought by The Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone Authority.  Jonathan also enjoyed a secondment at the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) in Bahrain in 2005, where he had day-to-day conduct of the TRA’s arbitration caseload.

Jonathan’s recent commercial dispute resolution work includes acting for Omimex de Columbia Ltd in an oil and gas hedging dispute.
