Henning Eichberg, Dr. phil. habil., is cultural sociologist and historian. Since 1987, he works as research fellow at IFO, Research Institute of Sport, Culture and Civil Society in Gerlev (Denmark).
Born 1942 in Schweidnitz/Silesia (Germany), he received his PhD in history in 1970 at Ruhr University Bochum and his habilitation (post doctoral degree) in cultural sociology in 1976 at Stuttgart University. From 1971 to 1982 he was assistant professor at the Institute of Sociology, Stuttgart University. In 1982 he emigrated to Denmark where he held professorships at the universities of Odense and Copenhagen.
He lectured at universities in Austria (Graz, Salzburg, Vienna), Finland (Jyvskyl), England (Keele), France (Rennes 2), Germany (Vechta/Osnabrck, Berlin), Japan (Tsukuba, Kyoto) and Sweden (Lund).
Member of the editorial boards of "Stadion" (International Journal of the History of Sport) and "International Review for the Sociology of Sport".
Co-founder of Institut International d'Anthropologie Corporelle in 1987.
He authored and co-authored 30 books in the fields of body culture and sport, early military technology, Indonesian studies and studies in ethnic minorities and national identity. Among these are Der Weg des Sports in die industrielle Zivilisation (1973), Militär und Technik (1976), Massenspiele (1977), Leistung, Spannung, Geschwindigkeit (1978), De grønne bølger (The green waves, Danish 1986), Festung, Zentralmacht und Sozialgeometrie (1989), Idrættens tredje vej (The third way of Danish sports, 1994) and Body Cultures (1998).
