Garry Humprhies

He received his first Leisure Industry pay check from the National Fitness Council, some 33 years ago as a Junior Leader at a Youth Camp on the Gold Coast. Since that time, he has secured a Masters in Business Administration an Associate Diploma in Community Recreation and is working on a Diploma of Project Management. He was accepted into the Royal Australian Institute of Parks and Recreation in 1988 and was a foundation member of the Australian Society of Sports Administrators in Queensland, and is regularly a guest speaker at conferences across Australia.

 

He graduated from the Officer Training School in 1983 with the rank of Lieutenant and served with the Army Reserve as an Army Engineer in Outback Australia than as an Infantry Platoon Commander in various small communities. His resume includes roles as Operations/Communications Manager World Masters Games, second in charge of the Gold Coast Indy Car Race, Manager Recreation Logan City Council, Area Sport & Recreation Officer with the State Government is some of the most isolated communities in Australia.

 

In his time he has also been a Meat Worker, Lumberjack, Circus Clown, Garbo, pantomime character with "Disney on Parade" and once hosted a radio dating show, he marched against the Vietnam War as a teenager and has organised rock concerts for Powder Finger, the Gurge and several other bands that play very loud music.

 

He enjoys backpacking around the world with his family and most recently attended a Parent/Child Space Camp with his 11 year old son in Huntsville Alabama, USA. He enjoys gardening, laughing, helping out at the local Scout Den. He paints, sculpts and reads History and Science Fiction in his spare time. He has been Regional Manager South West Queensland for the last 7 years and is proud to be a public servant for the people of Queensland and is a passionate advocate for small communities.
